Check this out: I just found a $10 bill on my desk. It was beneath a box of pictures and other stuff. Sweet. I just started a bowling league last week, so I'll put it to good use there. I'm looking forward to playing again tomorrow. My team, which consists of Mike, Mike's younger brother Andrew, my brother Tom, and myself, rolls every Tuesday at 6:30p. Last week there were only three other teams, but hopefully this week there'll be more. It was still a good time, though, and I made it home in time to watch Rescue Me before going to bed. Tom was gone on his first work trip last time, so Ted filled in for him.
These summer nights have really filled up with things to do. Monday nights are generally the only open nights, lately. On Tuesdays I now have bowling, but prior to that I went to watch Angie play volleyball on an all-girl league team that she organized. Wednesdays are sometimes open, but it seems like something always comes up, such as a late night at work. On Thursdays, Angie plays on a co-ed team with Jen and Cam, some friends of mine. Friday through Sunday always seems to include celebrations and get-togethers of one kind or another. Having so much going on makes it difficult sometimes to exercise as much as I'd like to. I've been in kind of a rut for several weeks now and haven't been going to the gym early in the morning, as I did during the spring. I'm trying to get that turned around, though.
Unless you haven't left the house since last week, you're no doubt aware of how ridiculously hot it has been. On Saturday morning, Angie and I walked in Pioneer's Park, and even then it felt like a death march. After that, I joined up with Ted and the rest of the guys as we moved Kelly into her new apartment here in Lincoln. We were all quick to jump in her pool after that was done. Definitely a relief. Yesterday afternoon, I went swimming again with Angie and Amy, Joel, and Aubrie. It was good to get in the water, but the pool was so crowded that it felt like swimming in a sea of human limbs.
After lifting weights this evening, I braved the heat one more time to make the trek through Pioneer's Park. I was (somewhat masochistically) disappointed at how much it had cooled (low 90s) because I was really hoping to sweat. I've gained back a few of the pounds I worked so hard to lose, so I want to take advantage of tough conditions to get back on track toward the fitness goals I've set for myself. I'm definitely not happy with where I'm at right now. Sometimes I feel like I'm wearing winter clothes that are thoroughly soaked.
Speaking of wearing clothes that are soaked, last Monday I was about 10 minutes into a Pioneer's walk when it started to rain. I decided to keep going, figuring that it would soon let up. It didn't. I could've turned and ran back to the house without getting too wet, but I pressed on. Because that's how I roll. Sometimes nature is something that must be endured, rather than avoided, and I wasn't about to let it be another excuse to not exercise.
The weekend before July 4, I made a weekend visit to Fairbury. Dad and Mom presented me with my birthday gift: two matching oak end tables. Dad made them himself, and they look absolutely amazing! As soon as I get the pictures of them downloaded, I'll post them here. They're truly gorgeous. It was a lot of fun being home. Kirsten, Tom, and Ross were all home, which was fun, and I just chilled out and relaxed. That Saturday I went with Mom and Dad to a pre-Fourth cookout at the home of some good friends of the family, Harold and Rose, who live near Firth. There was a lot of good food and strong drink, and Harold took us on a tour of his vineyard, which was cool. Of course, the following day after church, Mom and Dad prepared what always promises to be an excellent feast of grilled meats, cheesy potatoes, salad, beer, etc. Both of my grandmas and my grandpa joined us, and I was glad that they could. I'm hoping to get down to visit G and G at their place sometime soon.
Angie and I both had the day off on July 3, so we went and played some golf at HiMark that morning. I started out decent, but as usual, my game self-destructed toward the middle. That evening Amy and Joel hosted a party at their place, which was a lot of fun. It ended up being a pretty late night. Angie's older sisters were in town with their families, so it was fun to see them again. We all spent the Fourth in Seward, which was the first time I had partaken in the festivities there. For the uninitiated, Seward is Nebraska's Fourth of July capitol, so they have a lot of activities going on throughout the day, culminating with an excellent fireworks show. Of course, the day wouldn't have been complete without a cookout, and we had a good one at Angie's folks' place.
The following Saturday, we went to my second cousin Shane's wedding in Hastings. It was a really cool, classy occasion. His new wife, Abbey, seems like she'll be a good match for Shane, and I'm really happy for them. Angie and I had a good time dancing, and I think the rest of my family did, too. At one point, Ross was pushed into the middle of a dance ring, so he wowed everyone with his robot. Way better than mine.
Last weekend included yet more festivity and merriment. Lesa (Tom's girlfriend) graduated from nursing school, so we attended her reception and went out for drinks afterward. The following night, Angie and I went out to eat with Amy and Joel and then went to see the new Pirates Of The Carribean flick. (Quite excellent, I might add.)
So, with all that stuff going on, as well as the tubing trip, I guess it's no wonder I'm feeling a little heavier. Even so, anything extra I picked up won't be staying for long, I promise you that.
I have a whole bunch of pictures I meant to share tonight, but I don't have them downloaded to my computer yet, so it'll have to wait. But what I do have for you. . .is a haiku:
Walking in the rain
Is not good for your shoes, friend.
Don't walk through puddles.
So that's that. Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes. Party time. Excellent. Above all else, keep hope alive.
Peace and long life,
Nate
